Recently, I  often see people asking questions about how to convert their AVCHD video files  (in the format of .mts and .m2ts) which are recorded by HD camcorders like Sony  HDR-SR12E, JVC GZ-HD300, Canon HF S10, etc. to AVI, a popular general video  format. To help people solve this problem, this tutorial will show you how to  transcode MTS and M2TS video files into AVI files via Pavtube MTS/M2TS Converter.

Please follow  this step-by-step guide:
Step 1: Download, install and launch Pavtube MTS/M2TS Converter
This software  can convert MTS and M2TS to many other video and audio formats such as AVI, MP4,  3GP, MPG, MPEG-4, FLV, MOV, 3G2,  VOB, MP3, FLAC, MKA, OGG, WAV, AC3, M4A etc. perfectly. You can download its free  trial version here: Pavtube  MTS/M2TS Converter. And then install and run it.
Step 2: Load MTS and M2TS files, select AVI as  output format

Click “Add”  button to browse and load your MTS or M2TS files to this program. After that,  you should click on the drop-down list of “Format” to select AVI as the output  format.

Meanwhile, if  you want to combine multiple files to be one file, you can tick the checkbox of  “Merge into one file”, besides, you can specify the save path via clicking the  folder icon at the end of “Output”, if not, the program will export the output AVI  files to a destination folder set by default.

Step 3: Set advanced settings
If you want to  adjust the audio and video parameters of your files, you can click “Setting” to  do it. The following pop-up window allows you to change codec, the figures of  bit rate, frame rate, sample rate, etc. so that you can do advanced settings  according to your own requirements. Generally speaking, the larger figures  generate larger file size but better quality; the smaller values produce  smaller file size but inferior quality.

Step 4: Convert
After the above  three steps are finished, now you can click “Convert” button to start  conversion, and the output AVI files can be found by pressing button “Open”.

Just 4 simple  steps and you can convert AVCHD camcorder MTS/M2TS files to AVI with ease. If  you don’t want to wait around during the conversion, this program can automatically  shut down the computer when conversion is done.

From time to time, i find people with Sony DCR series to ask how to  play or edit Sony DCR Video on Mac OS X. Since it's a common problem for mac users to play camera videos with their computers, so i think this solution will give those who want to do more with camera videos  a little befinite.

Sony HDR series cams are Standard Definition Models .Most popular models are as the following.

What you need: A 6 pin or 4 pin cable. Usually, camcorders usually need a 4 pin cable end in order to be able to connect to the Mac, although sometimes they might allow a 6 pin end as well.
Step 1,  Make sure your camcorder is set to the correct mode for importing photos and videos. For information on which mode to choose, see the instructions provided with your camcorder. If your camcorder has a “sleep” mode, make sure it is disabled or set to a time increment long enough to allow your images and videos to download.
Step 2, To locate the four-pin FireWire port on your video camcorder. On most video camcorders, you'll find it located under a plastic or rubber boot. Leave the video camcorder powered off and simply lift up the boot from the camcorder and insert the smaller four-pin end of the FireWire cable into the the FireWire port of the camcorder.
Step 3,  Once the camcorder is connected, take the other end of the FireWire cable, the larger six pin end, and insert it into the FireWire port of your Mac. When both of the cables are connected, you can turn on the power to your video camcorder.
Step 4,  In a few seconds your Mac should automatically launch iMovie. Follow the on-screen instructions on your Mac and begin the video transfer from your video camcorder to your Mac.

When you would like to play or edit Sony videos on your Mac, Problems may confuse you when importing videos to QuickTime, iMovie, Final Cut Pro, Adobe Premiere Pro and other applications .Sony videos can’t be played or edited on Mac OS X directly. If you would like to play and edit them on Mac, the best solution is to apply the programme Sony DCR MTS Video Converter for Mac to convert Sony video formats to mp4 or mov on Mac. Then you can play and edit your Sony videos on Mac OS X successfully.

Sony DCR MTS Video Converter for Mac is a good SD video converter for Mac to convert standard definition videos (AVI, MP4, MPG, WMV, MOV, DV etc), which can also extract and convert audio track from your video files as WAV, MKA, OGG, 3GP, Mp3 and M4A. Moreover, you can refer to this guide about how to put Sony DCR dvd into imovie to edit them.By the way, all the output Sony camera video can be played on iPod, iPhone (iPhone OS 3.0), PSP, PSP Go, Apple TV, Nokia and other mobile players.

Tips:

MTS format is a high-definition MPEG, AVC, H.264 transport stream video file format which commonly used by HD camcorders such as Sony, Canon, Panasonic. MTS files are used primarily with Sony hardware. Camcorders make use of MTS in the form of AVCHD, a recording format made specifically for camcorders. Some camcorder models from Canon also use MTS files. These files are also present on Blu-ray disc compilations, therefore they are capable of storing quite a large amount of information and data tracks.

Since MTS is not a mac suitable format, it's necessary to convert mts files to mac with some useful application.
